A group of ephemera from this Italian-American fraternal organization, established in 1925 in Port Washington, L.I.


 Loggia John Michael Marino was established in 1925 in Port Washington, Long Island, a large center of the Italian American community outside New York City.  It was named after Private John Marino, a member of the 37th Division of the Indiana National Guard, who died in combat on the 9th day of November 1918.  He was the first Italian-American from Long Island to give his life for the United States.  John Michael was the son of James Marino, nè Giacomo Damita and his wife Stella, immigrants to America from Nusco near Naples.  See the website sited below for more information on Marino and Lodge 1389.


This small archive includes:


1928 membership book for Michele Picone, 49 years of age; a merchant originally from Avellino, Italy; signed by the Order's administrators. Title page with the embossed blind-stamp of the lodge. 22 pages + a dues-record at back recording entries to 1938. Text in Italian throughout, with the rules governing the order. No printer noted.


(with) another (blank) membership booklet, 54 pages + entry section; this with the text in Italian at front followed by the English translation of the rules. Printed by the Grassi Press, Frank R. Raffa, Prop. Commercial and Job Prinitng 278 Mott Street, N.Y.


 - 1938 typed letter signed from Paul D. Schreiber Supt. of Schools on Dept. of Education letterhead to Michael Picone Committee Chairman of the lodge, granting the request to use the high school grounds and stadium for Oct. 12.


 - 1936 receipt from the Port Washington News for printing 400 annual ball tickets.


 - 1937 Billing to a member on lodge letterhead for monthly dues & by-laws.


 - Two 1937 club receipts for payments for flowers & rent.


 - Dated the same day is a Dimostrazione Finanziaria (finance report) on the lodge letterhead detailing running finances for a billing; the reverse with further ms. financial notes.

 - 1938 Bill from S.F. Falconer, florist, for geraniums to the lodge.


The John Michael Marino Lodge was named for the WWI veteran of that name, the first Italian-American from Port Washington to give his life in that conflict. The membership books approx. 4 1/8" x 5 1/4" size, one slightly larger; blue & black fabric covers; letters with some age and wear; all materials in very good condition.
