Illustrated with 10 full-page plates and 18 half-page wood engravings by Randolph Caldecott.  Original decorated publisher's cloth; edges bumped and showing very minor wear; some minor foxing to the edges, otherwise a very good copy.

First edition, inscribed by the illustrator Randolph Caldecott to Frederick Green, dated 19 March 1878.  Lively travel book, the theme of which is the political, geographical, social, pontifical and poetical aspects of Italian life, characteristics which make Italy such a wonderful country to visit.  Alice Carr's is a book of memory, happy times among happy people, written  to bring to life her journey throughout the Riviera region and the Apennines.  The illustrations by Caldecott perfectly capture the tone of Carr's work and reinforce her focus on the common elements of everyday life in northern Italy.
