First English edition.   Collection of Pavese's early short stories, written before he graduated to the novel form in the 1930's.  The stories are personal in nature and  reflect his politics, his imprisonment and exile, his failure in love, and the social condition in Italy during the Fascist period.  Pavese translated English and America short stories and essay in the literary journal La Cultura and became its editor in 1934.  .
