Written for Both the Active and Arm-Chair Traveler

Rome.

Boston: L. C. Page, 1905. Item #914

Two volumes.  Small 8vo.  175 x 115 mm., [7 x 4 ½ inches].  [10], 303 pp.; viii, 294 pp.  Two frontispieces and 84 plates.  Bound in publisher’s decorative bindings, gilt decoration on upper boards and title gilt on spine; spines faded along with the edges of the boards, some light foxing, otherwise a nice copy.

Appears to be the second edition, originally issued in 1904.  This two-volume work covers both ancient and Renaissance Rome.  Field provides a historical view of the establishment and development of the city and its emperors as well as a tour of the artistic achievements of the many Italian artists who worked in Rome and the Popes who enlisted their skills.  Very well illustrated.
