First edition.  Hughes, the noted historian of 20th century Europe tackles the literary genre with his study of Italian writer who focused on the Jewish community over a fifty year period.   Of Hughes's work Arnaldo Momigliano writes, "A subtle study of a group of contemporary Italian writers who combine in various measures ancestral Jewish heritage with recent experiences of anti-semitic persecution. . . a work of precise scholarship and a performance of high humanity."  Italo Svevo, Alberto Moravia, Primo Levi, Natalia Ginzberg, Carol Levi and Giorgio Bassani are some of the authors Hughes examines in this work.
