Most famous for his association with Samuel Johnson, his Italian/English dictionary, and his critical works published in La  Frusta Letteraria, Joseph Baretti was an
Italian emigre forced to leave Italy for England because of his conflicts with authories in his home town of Turin.  In addition to his work on language and literature Baretti wrote these plays, which were never published and found hidden away in the library of the City of Verona.

Baretii was a critic of Goldoni and wrote these theatrical works as a challenge to style and dramatic content of the Venetian dramatist.  With the publication of these works, now appearing for the first time in 1977, it is apparent that his work did not match up to the dramatic power and use of language that Goldoni achieved in his numerous plays.
