Originally published in 1892 under the title Senilita, this translation by de Zoete was issued in 1932. This is the story of a middle aged man falling in love with a much younger women, ultimately ending in tragedy. Svevo's book about a love lost older man was ignored by the conservative Italian public in 1892 but was later recognized as an honest protrayal and psychological portrait of modern man in urban society. It is now considered one of the masterpieces of modern Italian literature. Includes a biography of Svevo and an appraisal of his work by the poet James Lasdun.
