Miscellaneous library of John Lowell, Boston philanthropist and scholar who traveled to India as a young man and after the death of his wife and children, spent the remainder of his life traveling in Europe, the Middle East and South Asia.  “Mr. Lowell was a fine scholar and possessed a valuable private library. He bequeathed $250,000 for the maintenance in Boston of annual courses of free public lectures on religion, science, and the arts. This establishment, the Lowell institute, went into operation in the winter of 1839-'40, and has been continued since that time with eminent success.”
