A man of literary tastes, Richard Grant White was involved in almost every aspect of book publishing, authorship, book design and criticism in New York during the post-Civil War period.  His auction sale reflects his eclectic tastes and is filled not only with the history of language, grammar, and orthography which were essential for his research and writing, but also literature in its broadest sense.  He had a considerable collection of Shakespeare works and the publications of the Bard’s contemporaries.  He collected editions of many of the most influential French and English authors, and good collection of books on theater and drama in general.
