Priced throughout with red ink.  Among Murphy’s passions was his interest in early travels and voyages of discovery.  Included were the works of Debry, Ramusio, Hakluyt, Purchas. Grynaeus, Thèvenot, Commelin and Ptolemy.  He owned 26 editions of Ptolemy’s “Cosmographia” printed between 1462 and 1600.  His collections of New France and Canada were nearly unsurpassed and his collection on the New Netherlands was near complete and filled with original documents.  He had a strong interest in the founding of Pennsylvania and Maryland, especially as it related to Swedish settlements there.  He had a 1493 Rome edition of the Columbus Letter ($850) and a slew of 16th and 17th century works on the colonization and development of the Atlantic coast.  The “Introduction” to the catalogue contains a detailed biography and general description of the collection.

Carl Cannon writes of Murphy, “Lawyer, scholar, politician, H. C. Cruse was elected Mayor of Brooklyn at the age of 32 and before his term expired was sent to Congress.  He helped establish the Brooklyn Eagle and later became minister to the Netherlands where he discovered and translated important Dutch documents relating to the early history of New York and New Jersey.”
