12mo. 140 x 90 mm. (5 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches). [5] - 108 pp. Five pages of hand-colored , six to a page, and ornamental woodcuts in the Bewick style at the end of some sections. Contemporary red leather spine over marbled paper boards, title in gilt on spine. Corners rubbed, light dampstains, not impacting text or illustrations. Front hinge starting, but binding remains sound and attractive.

Second edition originally published in 1815. Belson’s text contains short moral tales and each is illustrated with a corresponding woodcut. In the preface, Belson emphasizes that each tale is purposefully written in a short format capable of being committed to memory.

Owner's name written in pencil on front free endpaper "James Edward Niehurtz [?]" with a holiday gift inscription in pencil on front flyleaf "A Christmas present from Santa Claus."
