The Typographical Miscellany

Albany: Joel Munsell, 1850. Munsell, J(oel). The Typographical Miscellany. Albany: Joel Munsell, 1850. $ 125.00

8vo. 230 x 145 mm. (9 x 5 3/4 inches). 268 pp. Illustrated through. Brown publisher's cloth, embossed with decorative design, label pasted to front cover; worn at edges, some foxing, binding a bit shaken.

First edition, 200 copies printed only. Munsell began this project as a history of printing in New York State, county by country but he found scan resources as many printers "kept no files of their papers and had no knowledge of their predecessors. . ." So he changed course, focused on the origins of printing in America, newspaper printing in American, England and France and in the end produced a miscellany on the history of printing that is still useful and interesting today.

Munsell was one of the most enterprising and interesting printers in mid-century America. Bigmore and Wyman provide a detailed and informative biography of Munsell that documents his contribution to printing in American.
