Illustrated with 9 plates 4 of which are folding and numerous illustrations in the text. Near contemporary calf backed boards over decorated marbled paper boards; joints cracked yet sound and attractive; remnants of an ownership label in the first volume. This copy with a bill laid-in from Martin Breslauer to Alton Miller of Boston dated November 26, 1956.

Very good copy of one of the leading works on historical bibliography published in the first half of the 19th century. With useful information on the origins of writing, historical manuscripts, the origins of printing in Europe, China, the Americas, and the evolution of the art and mechanics of letterpress printing. The second part includes remarks on the classification of books in libraries, format of books, history of bookbinding, and the preservation of books. This is followed by a list of the most important works on the history of printing and an analysis of their importance to the history of the trade.
