First English Edition. Italo Zannier (b. 1932) is an Italian art historian and photographer. He has taught on the history of photography in universities throughout Italy and has published over five-hundred works on the subject including scholarly articles, books, and catalogs. The present work is centered around the photography of Carlo Naya (1816-1882), a pioneer of Italian photography best known for his early photographs of Venice and those documenting the restoration of the Giotto Frescoes. In it, Zannier describes, not just the art itself, but also the fruitful period that Naya was working in and the artistic landscape in Italy around the turn of the twentieth century when photographic art was still developing. The book makes use of the extensive collection inherited by Osvaldo Böhm when he took over the Naya firm in 1918. It was translated from an Italian work published in the same year under the title Venezia, archivio Naya by John Millerchip and Philip Roberts.
