He first achieved national renown in 1923 when the Daily Express sent him to Egypt to cover the excavation and opening of the tomb of Tutankhamun. This helped propel his later career as a travel writer. In that vein he produced a prolific number of books and articles covering his travels and experiences from London to South Africa, Spain to the Holy Land. A Traveler in Southern Italy is one of a handful of books he wrote on Italy which includes works like A Traveler in Rome (1957) and A Traveler in Italy (1964). In it he makes use of the new roads that had only recently been built in the region to explore the towns and countryside by car. As such it provides unparalleled insight into places right on the cusp of their discovery by foreign travelers.
