Publishers’ light blue cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine and a gilt stamp on the upper cover with a stylized Trajan’s column; unclipped illustrated dust jacket. Book is Fine: in superb condition with little signs of use or wear. Jacket is Very Good: some chipping along the top edge and minor soiling and shelf wear throughout. A very attractive copy. 

First Edition. Published for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and written by Margaret R. Scherer, who worked there as a Research Fellow, the book presents readers with a view of Rome as it is described in art and material artifacts from the ancient period to today alongside contemporary photographs and historical and cultural sketches and descriptions. An excellent survey of the city’s cultural output which examines not only what it has produced but, more importantly, how it has impacted the work of artists, writers and thinkers in Europe and all over the world.
