Her fictional works have tended to be either crime-thrillers or historical novels. In 2000 she made an extended trip to Florence which inspired her to focus her attention on researching the Italian Renaissance and specifically the role that women played in the city’s cultural, artistic and political life. In the Company of the Courtesan, about a courtesan and her companion fleeing to Venice after the 1527 Sack of Rome, was her second historical novel set in Renaissance Italy. It followed The Birth of Venus (2003) which gained widespread critical and popular acclaim when it was released.
