Manfred Wundram (1925-2015) was a noted German art historian who specialized in the paintings and architecture of the Renaissance and produced several works on those subjects in collaboration with Taschen. He held early-career research appointments at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, at the Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Harvard University, and at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart before becoming Professor of Medieval and Modern Art History at the Ruhr University in Bochum. The present work is a study of sixteenth century Italian architect Andrea Palladio. It opens with a concise biography of the artist and continues chronologically through his output starting with the Villa Godi in 1537 and ending with the Teatro Olimpico in 1580. Illustrated with vivid photographs of Palladio’s work, the book also makes use of architectural plans to give the reader a sense of the process of creating Renaissance architecture. The book was edited by Peter Gossel and translated from the German by Maureen Roycroft Summers.
