First Signet Classic Edition. Pietro di Donato (1911-1992) was an Italian-American author whose writings focused on the struggles of the American working-class in the early twentieth century. Christ in Concrete (1939), his first and best-known novel, was inspired by his father who died when a building collapsed while he was working as a bricklayer in New York City. Hailed for its gritty depiction of the urban working class, it was compared to other literary classics like John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.
