First Modern Library Edition. Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897), the noted Swiss art historian, writes on the social history and cultural output of Italy from 1350 to 1550 using materials collected during a prolonged research visit to the country from 1853 to 1854. Originally published in German as Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien (Basil, 1860), this edition, complete and unabridged, follows the English translation by S.G.C Middlemore first published in 1878.
