Textured cloth limp covers; corners a bit bumped; hinges a bit weak, and the first volume loose in binding. The first two volumes contain a nearly identical lithographed title-page in color, with gold and silver flourishes. The colors of the borders are different on each title-page. The third volume has a calligraphed title-page by Annie Polak. All volumes otherwise entirely calligraphed with colored ink and partly heightened with gold/bronze paint. Each page has the same lithographed border as the one on the title. The third volume also has lithographic borders. Beautiful calligraphy exercise by Anna Polak, a young female student studying at the school run by the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Semarang, Indonesia in the years 1788 to 1880, The work contains texts in various languages, including Dutch, German, English, and French, many alphabets illustrated in color. The penmanship exercises consist of short poems usually expressing remembrance and affection, with titles such as, “On Happiness”, “Guardian Angel”, “Patience Brings Roses”, “Forget me Not”, “Love and Duty to Parents”. Each is written in various calligraphic styles, illustrated with flourishes, borders designs, and initial letters. Each of the volumes also includes calligraphic alphabets in Medieval and Renaissance styles copied from religious manuscripts from the period. Each of the volumes are progressively more complex and demonstrate the growth and development of Anna Polak’s artistic skills. On most pages, she signs and dates her work. Polak, Anna.
