12mo. 150 x 100 mm., [6 x 4 inches].  [32], 172, [2] pp., [printer’s mark followed by a final blank].  Bound in contemporary limp vellum; ties missing, small piece of vellum missing from spine, some minor restauration to the area.  Contemporary manuscript signature of a private collector of front flyleaf.  With faults a nice copy in genuine condition.


This book is dedicated to the Duchess of Ferrara, Renata di Francia.  It contains much information about the management of her household and other noble households, including the estates managed by La Donna Giulia dalla Rovere D’Este, Isabella Borromeo, Laura Gonzaga Trivultia, the author’s own mother Lucretia Bona de Lanteri “noblewoman of Brescia”, the Duchess of Parma, and Vittoria Farnese Duchess of Urbino to name the most prominent.


First edition of this work on domestic economy, and one of the first of its kind in the genre of estate management.  In addition to outlining the responsibilities of noblemen and women, Lanteri outlines in detail the operations of a noble house and the jobs  associated with its maintenance.  Much information on the kitchen, preparation for banquets, management of the larder, purchasing food and wine, organization of a table of large parties and some recommend dishes and menus.
