Condemnation of the Hoarding & Reselling of Wine at Exorbitant Prices and Regulations Controlling the Trade for the Public Good, Bologna, 1602

Bologna: Per Vittorio Benacci, Stampator Camerale, 1602. Item #1403

Broadside.  433 x 310 mm., [17 x 12 ¼ inches].  Illustrated at the top of the sheet with the coat-of-arms of Monsignor Marsilio Landriani and of the City of Bologna.  Previously folded with a small tear at the lower fold, not affecting the text.  Paper stock is lightly brown showing its age, other wise a very good copy.

Issued by the Vice-Legate of Bologna, Monsignor Marsilio Landriani, this proclamation condemns the hoarding of wine, “by many people moved by greed, thus causing great harm and deprivation to the people of Bologna.”  The proclamation makes a distinction between good that are a necessity  of living or human services and those that are not essential to the communities well-being.

“Because of the great scarcity of wine this year, which threatens to cause even greater shortages, His Mos Illustrious Lordship orders that no one may buy wine from the wine cellars in quantities greater than what is necessary for personal consumption, family needs or for their inns and taverns, and that payments already made beyond this limit shall be null and must be refunded.  Those violating this order will be fined 50 scudi, and for each offense, half will go to the accuser and half to the Treasury of Bologna. . .”

Rare broadside, not cited in ICCU (Italian Union Catalogue) or OCLC.
