First American edition.  Award winning biography of Iris Origo, daughter of Anglo American parents, brought up in England and America by her grandparents, and wife of a minor Italian aristocrat.  The story covers her early years as a privileged young girl, her education, her marriage to Antonio Origo, her move to the Val d'Orcia and  the reconstruction of her estate La Foce before and during the War years.  Of particular importance was her and Antonio's navigation of mine field of the Italian facism and coming war.  The biography is based on unpublished letters, diaries, and papers and is considered a definitive work on Origo's life and provides a vivid account of Italy during the war years.
