The text by Amedio Maiuri covers the history of the city of Pompeii, the impact of the destruction of the city by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and an account of the excavations of Pompeii that have taken place since the 18th century. The beautifully produced photographs accompany the text and add greatly to the success of the book as a guide to the region. The photographs were taken mostly by Giovanni Vetti, with a few by F. Alinari of Firenze and Anderson of Rome.
