Joseph Tracy (1794-1874) a Congregational minister, was a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Vermont where he received his divinity degree. He was minister to churches in West Thetford and West Fairlee, Vermont. He was the editor for some time of the Chronicle of Winsor, Vermont and of the Boston Recorder, and at the end of his career, the American Theological Review. His main occupation during the middle career was as Secretary of the Massachusetts Colonization Society and American Colonization Society. He also published books and essays on the various missionary work supported by the Society. Tracy’s book The Great Awakening was one of the first to examine the experience of religious revival based on the publications of the ministers who foster it and of those who opposed it. Relying on the writings of Whitefield, Edwards, Buel, Whitlocke, Tennent, Bellamy, and others, as well as published reports in newspapers and pamphlets, Tracy offer a view into the good and bad aspects of the revival. He charts the course of the revival through the towns and villages of New England and concludes with a short history of the revival in Virginia. Tracy is credited by some modern historians as the author of the term, “Great Awakening”.
