Paris: Chez Daumont, 1756 - 1784? Item #1068

Folio.  Paper size 420 x 290 mm., [16 x 11 ½ inches]; platemark 240 x 160 mm., [9 ½ x 6 ½ inches].  Illustrated with 6 engraved plates.  Bound in late 19th century vellum backed marbled paper boards; endpapers heavily foxed discoloring plate 6.

Rare series of engraved ornamental vases designed by the French painter and draughtsman Maurice Jacque (1712-1784).  Little is known of Jacque’s biography other than he worked at the Royal Gobelins Manufactory from 1756 until his death in 1784.  Although most noted for their tapestries, during the middle years of the 18th century the Gobelins produced ornaments, bronzes, and other furniture for the Palace and Jacque must have been making designs for decorative use.  This series of plates demonstrates his skill at creating ornamental vases, each highlighted with floral arrangements to set off the decorative elements of the design.

The engraved title is signed by M. Rousselet F. Tardieu (1732-1824) as “Sculp”. Rousselet was born into a family of engravers which went back to the 17th century.  Her father Étienne was a metal engraver, and her brothers Giles and Jean were both engravers of note.  After the death of her husband the cartographer and engraver Pierre François Tardieu, Marie-Anne made engravings of natural history subjects which were published in works by Lacépède, Buffon, de Lamarck, and Latreille.  The engravings in this suite are crisp and clean and show considerable skill in creating tonal variations and perspective.
