First edition.  First in a series of manuals written and sometimes published by Goupil for the artist and student of art learning the best practice of oil painting, sculpture, photography, and even art restoration.  This work is devoted to painting with water color and washes.  In it Goupil focuses on the various techniques for creating proper colors, followed by methods of applying color to various media.  The table of contents listing chapter on techniques and lessons for drawing, tools required for drawing and painting, choice of art papers for the proper reception of ink and color, methoda for making color, the use of color of portraits, animals, flowers and fruits, and more.  The colored lithographic frontispiece is entitled, “Thèorie de la Couleur”.

Although not a member to the noted family of printers and publishers, and auctioneers,  Frédéric Goupil was a notable member of the French art world and a student of Horace Vernet, the noted Orientalist.  Goupil accompanied Vernet on a trip to the Middle East in 1839 - 1840 and was recognized for his colored lithographs and the use of the daguerreotype, which illustrated Vernet travel account.
