8vo. 213 x 160 mm., [8 ½ x 6 ¼ inches].  [4], 93, 1 pp. of text; illustrated with 100 engravings.  Bound in contemporary brown mottled Spanish calf, red title label on spine. The binding is a bit rubbed but sound and attractive copy. 


Includes a presentation inscription from “Manuel Saenz de Fejadox á su amigo D. Manuel Sanchez Ramos 1854”.  It also includes a notice from the publisher that reads, “This [book]is the property of the publisher who will denounce before the law, any copies that are not numbered and signed.”  This copy has the initials of the publisher and is numbered 234.


First an only edition of Planella y Coromina’s work on perspective and its application to theater design and settings.  It includes chapters on the theory of perspective and the various techniques employed by artists to create a visual representation of three dimensional objects on paper and in theater settings.  The text includes about 20 pages of instructions for measuring the size and scope of a theater space, the physical elements required in a theater for making perfect sound, and calculating proper sight lines for audience members attending the theater.  It also includes instructions for translating drawings and designs into actual theater settings and props. 


The 100 engravings, designed by Planella y Coromina and executed by the firm Mabon  y P. Serra of Barcelona, illustrate the text with both conceptual designs and instructional images for the construction of theater settings and backgrounds.
