Anthology of American Negro Literature.

Very good copy of an early printing of Calverton's Anthology, first printed in 1929. Calverton (1900-1940) was a literary critic and founder of the Modern Quarterly a left leaning periodical and a publishing vehicle for African-American intellectuals. Today he is probably best know for this Anthology which, according to the introduction, is the first of its kind and provides a historical review of the fiction, drama, poetry, spirituals, blues, labor songs, essays and autobiographies written by the African-American community. It is dedicated to Walter White, a leader of the NAACP, "in admiration of his courage in the cause of his people . . ." Item #1
