8vo.  220 x 145 mm., [8 ¾ x 5 ¾ inches].  Stitched as issued, wrappers wanting; fore edge of title leaf chipped at margin and at top edge, and a bit at spine, otherwise sound copy.


First edition.  Walter Johnson was the corresponding secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and member of the National Institute.  This address was delivered in Washington before the membership of the Institute on the 6th of April 1844.


This copy is inscribed to the ‘Hon. Robert Winthrop with the regards of the Author’ and has the inscription ‘N. E. Genealogical Society’ beneath the author’s presentation. Part of the name ‘Robert’ is missing from the inscription as a result of the chip at the top edge of the title-page.
